What is MMR in DOTA 2?

Matchmaking Rating, or MMR is a value that determines the skill level of each player. This value is used in matchmaking. Winning increases a player's MMR, while losing decreases it.

Calculation

  • The exact calculation for earning medals is kept secret by Valve and may change over time.
  • This page only reflects rough estimates based on community observations. Please discuss any proposed changes on the talk page.
  • MMR is not the only factor in determining medal rank.
  • MMR will not always match up with their estimated medal.
  • It is normal to be a few hundred points off from the numbers given here.
  • It is possible for some players to receive medals far above their MMR, because:
    • Medals cannot decrease in rank even if they lose many games.
    • The player has multiple Steam accounts.
    • The system remembers and judges player performance based on their peak skill level, not their current skill level. This is a common mechanism in competitive games to combat smurfs and intentional derankers.
  • Medals are earned based on the highest skill level obtained during the season and will not decrease for the remainder of the season.
  • Both solo and party ranked MMR is considered when determining medal ranks. Solo MMR plays a larger role.
  • Divine ranks can only be earned through solo MMR.
